For this film, I composed two original solo vocal works for tenor, both setting the poetry of William Blake. I wrote the melodies to complement Blake’s words and bring his poetry to life within the world of the film.
The pieces are beautifully sung by the young Edward, who has previously performed at the Royal Albert Hall, bringing a wonderful sense of character and expression to the music.
coney where's your castle
composed and recorded in July 2026
Coney, Where's Your Castle? is a short work for two violins, inspired by an unexpected adventure through the Dorset countryside in May 2023. Before my visit, I had discovered Coney Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, while studying a map of the area. Expecting the dramatic remains of an ancient fortress, I set off in search of its walls and towers. Instead, I found myself wandering across what appeared to be nothing more than a gentle hill, only to realise much later that I had been standing on top of the fort all along.
The castle had never disappeared—it had simply been reclaimed by the landscape. The story became even more charming when I discovered that coney is an old English word for rabbit. Rather than being the seat of powerful kings or the setting for legendary battles that shaped the history of Britain, the site was most likely associated with rabbit warrens. It was hardly the grand medieval fortress I had imagined, yet that gentle twist of expectation became the very heart of this piece.
Surrounded by the enchanting woodlands of Dorset, I found myself reflecting on the stories hidden beneath our feet. Every landscape carries the echoes of those who came before us, preserving centuries of forgotten lives beneath layers of earth. That sense of quiet mystery—the feeling that the land remembers even when we do not—became the true inspiration for this music.
Folk music has always been the music of storytelling. Some songs celebrate heroic deeds, others preserve life's lessons through irony, while many simply delight in humour and human misadventure. My own search for Coney Castle seemed to belong to that tradition: a light-hearted tale of expectation, discovery, and finding something far more meaningful than I had set out to find.
When the piece was complete, I hoped to find a performer who could bring its character to life. By chance, while walking through my seaside hometown in East Sussex, I heard an extraordinary fiddle player filling the high street with traditional folk melodies. From the very first notes, I knew I had found the musician I had imagined while writing the piece.

Rebecca is a classically trained violinist with a lifelong passion for folk music, specialising in Celtic and Eastern European traditions. She has performed on stages from Glyndebourne to Glastonbury and has recorded and performed across genres including rock, pop, folk, singer-songwriter, and string quartet work. Combining strong sight-reading, developing parts by ear, creative collaboration and confident improvisation, Rebecca brings versatility and musicality to every collaboration.

Meet Colin
Colin has been with Rebecca since 2002, but his story began in Germany around 1850, when his old soul character was built in as an original feature. He was deliberately antiqued in an attempt to disguise his then lack of life experience. He was given carefully crafted scratches across his back and the expression of a man who's seen too much - the very expression which earned him his name. The details of his life before they met remain a mystery.

The finale of the piece performed in rehersal
Vico Equense, perched dramatically on a cliffside in southern Italy, gazes across the Gulf of Naples toward the majestic silhouette of Mount Vesuvius. The piece begins at first light—when the town stirs to life with a flurry of movement: scooters dart through narrow alleys, deliveries buzz by, and the air hums with the playful melody of small engines and cheerful horns. As the day unfolds, the energy shifts; by afternoon, the tempo softens and the streets pulse with the warm murmur of laughter and conversation flowing from lively bars. The climax arrives at sunset, when the sun slips behind Vesuvius, igniting the sky in a blaze of purples and reds that dance across the pastel buildings. A vivid portrait of place—where culture, color, and character collide.

While working at Marble Hill House for English Heritage, I developed a body of compositions informed by the historical and spatial narratives of the 18th-century Georgian villa. These works, were subsequently recognised by the producers of the lecture series and selected for inclusion in the film Soane and Turner: Architecture, Art, Friendship and Fishing.
